The Neo-Hellenes in the Ottoman Empire, 1830–1869

The question of Hellenic nationality in the Ottoman Empire is contemporaneous with creation Greece. By using example plans for deportation Greeks 1869, this article contextualizes so-called neo-Hellene population to argue that Naturalization Law same year did not intend create a more inclusive imperial identity; rather, it aimed establish and maintain control state over subject peoples by facilitating expatriation, displacement, naturalization, loss subjecthood. Through examination individual cases as well bureaucratic diplomatic correspondence, also examines practical ramifications Empire. This new law sought identify, ultimately expel, select ethno-religious communities deemed be undesirable. In 1860s, faced constant threat separatism from non-Muslim populations, reacted creating an exclusivist national identity denaturalizing those populations. Most importantly, denaturalization process would entail (tebʿid) significant portions native population, most whom were nationality.
